Until mid-September, important 20th century expressionist oeuvres from the Kunsthaus Collection will be exhibited in relation to one another in the large painting gallery in the Müller building. During this show, certain ‘neo-expressionist’ works by Georg Baselitz, A. R. Penck and Anselm Kiefer will be positioned just opposite important works created by preceding generations of German, Austrian and Swiss expressionist artists from 1908 to 1926. Notably included in this group of artists known as ‘Die Brücke’ founded in Dresden in 1905, are Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein and Emil Nolde. Also on display will be masterpieces by Hermann Scherer and Albert Müller of the ‘Rot-Blau’ (Red-Blue) artist association of Basel, which emerged in the mid-twenties. Works by Max Haufler, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckmann and Lovis Corinth complete the presentation of Expressionist oeuvres.
This exhibition brings together paintings, works on paper and wood sculptures. It enables the viewer to experience oeuvres from different time periods that were created by a similar artistic impetus, and allows for study of their commonalities and disparities. Several of the displayed works have not been on view for a long time while an oeuvre each by Haufler and Müller are recent acquisitions and are being presented for the first time.
