Kunsthaus Zürich

The new Kunsthaus

5 October 2012 – 6 January 2013

Things are moving! The Kunsthaus extension is evolving dynamically, and the time has come to reveal what is happening on Heimplatz with a display in the large exhibition hall. Planning has now reached the stage at which we can present large models and lots of fascinating details of the architecture as well as answering many questions: why the Kunsthaus is growing, why an extension designed by a world-famous architect was chosen – and, most of all, what the new building on Heimplatz will look like inside and out. How will visitors be received, what impression will the space create, what services will be on offer?

Naturally, there will be plenty of art on display too. The curators will be introducing presentation concepts, bringing out works that, for reasons of space, cannot be shown until the new building is complete, and revealing new acquisitions that have already been made in anticipation of the extra space that will be available. The Kunsthaus will be exploring new avenues with private collections and foundations. For this exhibition, David Chipperfield will create separate spaces in the Bührle gallery that are very similar in terms of size, equipment and lighting to the new original. This will enable us to see whether both art and visitors will feel at home, and whether the new Kunsthaus will meet – or maybe even exceed – expectations.

There will be discussion events, special art education programmes, and an Open Day as our way of saying ‘thank you’ to everyone for their interest and curiosity.
