Kunsthaus Zürich

2014 – Prelude to the New Year

More than 300’000 people visited the Kunsthaus this past year and we are delighted with the positive echo that our work evokes. Thank you again for being with us this year. A first highlight in our exhibition program is awaiting you: expressionism and fauvism are the two basic art movements that gave direction to the budding of modernism, and for the first time ever in Switzerland, you can view an exhibit conceived in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum, which shows the reciprocal relations of these movements with masterpieces of the time. This will be as of the 7th of February in the Bührle gallery.

There’s a lot of activity going on behind the scenes: This year we will enter the works of the collection that have been already digitalized into a modern museum software, which will facilitate and streamline a number of work processes – this is a gigantic project that demands enormous financial as well as human resources. In the meantime, courageous craftsmen are climbing the large (and somewhat leaky) roof of the historic Moser building, which calls for a thorough but gentle renovation. The foundation Stiftung Zürich Kunsthaus, which is responsible for our buildings here at the Heimplatz, will collaborate in the coordination of the restoration project.

If all goes according to plan, we will soon be able to celebrate the laying of the cornerstone for the Kunsthaus extension project of David Chipperfield, which has been worked out in all its details and is now ready to be realized. As you might have heard from the media, and the positive referendum notwithstanding, a recourse with legal elaborations brought on a delay. However, now we move on: the Kunsthaus is well positioned and prepared to go forth into the future. The first delve of the spade should be easy…

With warm greetings,
Christoph Becker
