Already during Phase I the project was managed jointly by the city of Zurich and by the Kunsthaus Zurich. The extension’s partners (the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, the Stiftung Kunsthaus Zürich, and the city of Zurich) issued a joint statement of intent stressing the project’s great significance and setting out the details of their collaboration. Their objective: to build an extension to the Kunsthaus.
The importance of the project was further emphasized by the active presence on the steering committee of leading figures representing the partners: Walter B. Kielholz, Christoph Becker, Thomas Wagner, Corine Mauch (replaces Elmar Ledergerber) and Kathrin Martelli.
In addition, the project enjoyed a prominent place on the municipal council’s 2006-2010 legislative agenda.
The Steering Committee (SC), the body with ultimate authority, makes strategic decisions, assigns responsibility, and procures and allocates the necessary resources. Its diverse network proved invaluable during the initial phase, and it was the source of the project’s ambition and ‘drive’.
The active presence on the SC of leading figures representing all three partners serves as a guarantee of the body’s effectiveness.
Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft/Kunsthaus Zürich
Walter B. Kielholz (President of the ZKG since 2002, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Credit Suisse Group, and Delegate of the Board of Directors of Swiss Re) is the leading representative of the Kunstgesellschaft, and is responsible for raising its membership to over 20,000.
Christoph Becker (Director of the Kunsthaus since July of 2000) increased footfall during the renovation to 300,000 visitors annually and has secured the cooperation of celebrated partners (MoMA, Tate, Royal Academy et al.). On his initiative and under his aegis, the contents of the new Kunsthaus are being defined, and thus providing the foundation for all further development.
Martin Wetter (banker, charged with finances on the Board of the Kunstgesellschaft) lends his experience to the core team and heads the financing/fundraising module.
Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus
Thomas Wagner (President of the Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus [SZKH], former Municipal Councillor and former Mayor of Zurich) manages the properties in use by the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft and kept the renovation on time and on budget. He contributed significantly to the success of the vote on the renovation loan in 2000.
City of Zurich
Elmar Ledergerber (Mayor) oversees the city’s political process and personally provides a top-level liaison between city and canton. And of course, he also ensures constructive collaboration on the part of the entire city administration.
Kathrin Martelli (Municipal Councillor, Head of Zurich’s Department of Structural Engineering) represents the expertise of the DSE, which is of ultimate significance to the project’s high-quality implementation. Franz Eberhard, Martelli’s Director of the Town Planning Office, represents his office on the core team. Both Martelli and Eberhard supply the project with experienced professionals from the Department of Structural Engineering (DSE) and coordinate the collaboration of the Town Planning Office (TPO), the Office for Building and Construction (OBC), and the Mayor’s Office (MO).
The core team and project management coordinate the collaboration of the various individual modules, in practical matters as well as scheduling, and monitor overall planning of all operational activities. They provide the SC with the material required for decision-making and, where necessary, involve key figures affected by the project. Project management is suppied by the Kunsthaus.
The project modules (contents, architecture/urban planning, financing and communications) are headed by proven experts from the Kunsthaus and the city of Zurich, who are charged with implementing the strategic and operational objectives as set out by the SC and the core team. In turn, the modules are themselves supplied with basic documents necessary for their decision-making (such as concepts and possible courses of action).
