The formation of a team of experts led to a clear restoration concept. The goals were established in a three stage program and through the collaboration of metal restorers, metal workers, structural engineers and consultants specialized in corrosion and surface stabilization.
To avoid submitting the Gates to the strains of a lengthy transfer which could have brought on fissures in the structure was a joint decision. Therefore the Gates of Hell are restored on site.
The first stage is marked by the installation of a support construction that allows for the sculpture to be moved. At first the Gate needs to be moved away from the wall by a few meters so that, in a second stage, the entirely corroded structural elements like the reinforcements and the connection screws and anchors, which are all located on the back, can be exchanged with devices in a high-alloyed chloride-resistant metal (chromium-nickel steel.) The third stage will be dedicated to the front of the monument. Scientific research is to shed light on the kind of corrosion products and phenomena. The results of the analyses will help determine the choice of the appropriate methods of cleaning by which the formed deposits are to be removed. In the end touch-up measures will even out the look of the Gate. Finally, the application of an appropriate protective finish will allow for the conservation of the surface.
