A single crane handles the lifting of the Gates, whilst two cranes are necessary to turn it.
Eye-hitches are inserted and secured to the specifically designed holes in the new steel support structure. The belts to turn the monument are connected directly to the transportation frame.
After the positioning of The Gates of Hell on its back, some accessible sections are examined for possible tears.
The minimal torsion of the metal elements that are screwed one to another has lead to a light expansion of some pre-existent micro-fissures.
During transportation and due to its horizontal position, the statue “The Thinker” has to be held toward the back. Otherwise its own weight and the vibrations endured during the journey could lead to tensions and make for tears near the joints.
“The Three Shades”, which had previously been removed from the monument for restoration and conservation work, will be transported to London in a separate wooden crate.
On the eve of September 5th 2006 the flat-bed truck and its precious load are ready to leave. They arrive in London in the early morning of September 9th.
