In the beginning of September The Gates of Hell is scheduled to travel to London. This requires the making of a transportation frame without which a safe transfer of the monument would be impossible. This frame needs to be connected to the support structure of the monument.
The transport is not without risks. Because of its size it needs to occur in a horizontal position which implies that the monument has to be tilted and laid down, which could cause further tensions in its structure. Therefore it is very important, to determine and map the presence of any micro-fissures before departing. Based on this map, eventual new micro-fissures can be detected upon the monument’s return.
Wooden beams further support the individual frame elements.
In order to better capture the weight on the back during the turning of The Gates of Hell, several wooden beams have been installed as support beams.
