Cross-section of the paint layer

Bonnard did not use paint from a tube, preferring instead to mix his paints himself on the palette, using a combination of pigment and binding agent. The cross-section polish of a sample of paint from the pink reveals clear differences in the fineness of the pigment grind: coarse red, white and black pigment grains together with much smaller light reds and oranges.

The binding agent used is currently still undergoing scientific analysis.
