Félix Vallotton

Technological analysis

Detailed technological analyses using a microscope as well as a range of diagnostic irradiation techniques such as ultraviolet and infrared accompanied the conservation work.

The results offer an insight into Vallotton’s painting technique and the materials he used. For example, he employed a very fine canvas to which he applied a thin, white ground coat. Vallotton then applied the composition, for which he had already created a preparatory oil study, to the primed canvas using a small number of layers of slightly thinned paint. He clearly placed the areas of colour adjoining each other and left ‘Le bain au soir d’été’ unvarnished, which is what gives the picture its matt appearance.
