Technological analysis

Upper right section of the picture under transmitted light (picture taken in a darkened room with a bright light source placed behind the painting): The cross-members of the stretcher can be seen through transmitted light as the paint layer is very thin; note how the light shines through.

Detailed examinations using special technology will be carried out before the conservation and restoration work begins. The structure of the paint layer and used materials will be analysed with the help of scientists and technical and visual aids. These researches shall resolve questions related to the production process:

Is the extremely matt surface really painted with oil or did Hodler mix other ingredients into the binding agent?

Detail of the lower tacking margin: the canvas was stretched on the frame after the picture was painted.

A comparison of the two versions is also interesting with respect to the similarities and differences between the figures and the possible transfer of the underdrawing. Pencil lines on the paintwork and a grid underneath are visible with naked eye.
