Kunsthaus Zürich

Max Beckmann

Max Beckmann, another vital expressionist, four of whose paintings can be seen in the Kunsthaus Zurich, creates a profound world view of mythical intensity. All the way through to the black-white drawing, his distinctive style, modelled on Picasso and Matisse, displays his dualistic vision which seeks to capture the tension of the universal through a series of oppositions: love and violence, masculine and feminine. These polarities can be sensed in the relationship between the two actresses; in deciphering the symbolism of the decor and costumes and the interplay in the pictorial relationships the viewer is drawn beyond the body language of these powerful figures into the skilful composition of the image itself.
