Kunsthaus Zürich

Italian Baroque Painting

David Maurits Koetser came from an Anglo-Dutch family of art dealers. He was a respected dealer in London, the US and finally Zurich, and made a significant contribution to the rediscovery of the long neglected and underrated genre of Italian baroque painting: it is thanks to him that the Kunsthaus now has a group of first-class gallery pictures from this interesting epoch, which would otherwise normally only be found in royal galleries of long standing. Domenichino’s first great landscape painting of the baptism of Christ is a milestone in the development of ideal landscape painting, the culmination of which can be seen in the first version of Claude Lorrain's pastoral work featuring the Arch of Constantine.
