Hodler already had a significant body of early realistic work behind him when, in 1890, his rigorous, energetic style of expressive two-dimensionality made him one of the standard bearers of the new, trail-blazing Symbolism and consequently one of Europe’s leading artists – the outstanding monumental painter of the period. Since the opening of the Kunsthaus in 1910 his work has been at its centre; numerous large compositions and bright rapturous landscapes provide visitors with a comprehensive insight into his work.
