Balthasar Burkhard

Balthasar Burkhard was one of the first Swiss artists to employ large-format enlargements in a new approach to photographic design. He began with monumental, statue-like details of the human body and nudes, going on to produce series of works in which the landscape emerged as his preferred theme. Throughout his life he worked almost exclusively in black and white, but shortly before his death he created a series of flower pictures in colour: monumentally oversized and yet fragile blossoms against an undefined black background.
