Portrait of Georges Seurat
Date and photographer unknown
Georges Seurat was born in 1859 in Paris and, but for a few brief interruptions, was to spend the whole of his short life in the French capital. At the age of 18 he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where for two years he was instructed by Henri Lehmann, himself a disciple of Ingres. Seurat then went on in short order to develop his own characteristic painting technique, featuring densely applied individual dots of colour. His great work, 'Un Dimanche à la Grande Jatte' (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte), which was first publicly exhibited in 1886, saw the young artist immediately crowned chief of a new avant-garde. In 1891, Seurat's untimely death at the age of 31 from complications arising from an extremely infectious strain of diphtheria tore him away from a busy and productive life as an exhibiting artist.
