Kerry James Marshall Exhibition Tour ZAW
American artist Kerry James Marshall (born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955, lives in Chicago) is considered one of the most important contemporary painters of our time. His large-format, multi-faceted works consistently focus on black people.
Marshall's paintings are powerful images of the life and history of the African American community, imbued with colour, pain, hope and vibrancy. His works are full of art-historical and socio-cultural references. With these diverse motifs, Marshall not only comments on history and social reality, but also celebrates diversity, resilience and confidence.
Guest curator Mark Godfrey (London) has spent nearly a decade conceiving this exhibition from its first idea to the realization. During this tour he will offer valuable insights into the genesis of his project, his dialogue with the artist in his Chicago studio, and how the selection of the numerous large-format paintings came about.
Furthermore, the curator will also discuss what distinguishes and connects this collaborative exhibition across its three different venues: first in Fall/Winter 2025 in London, currently in Zurich, and starting in the Fall of 2026 in Paris.
The guided tour is held in English.
