The original Kunsthaus was built on Heimplatz in 1910. Since then it has been expanded multiple times: first by Kunsthaus architect Karl Moser in 1925, then in 1958 with the large exhibition gallery planned by the Pfister brothers, which can be divided up as required, followed in 1976 by Erwin Müller’s annexe.

David Chipperfield’s design for a new building flooded with light lends ascetically elegant form to the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft’s idea of a museum for the 21st century. When the new extension joins the existing Kunsthaus building in 2020, it will form both a dynamic ensemble and Switzerland’s largest art museum.

Find out more about the architecture of the Kunsthaus and book your private guided tour. Starting in September 2019 we are offering three different architectural guided tours.

In our ‘Chipperfield’ tour of the construction site you’ll learn all about the extension and its star architect’s vision.

The ‘From Moser to Chipperfield’ tour includes all the extensions and takes in everything from the existing building to the construction site.

The ‘Architecture and Art’ tour includes the full package. In addition to the architectural tour of the existing building and the construction site covered by ‘From Moser to Chipperfield’ it takes you into the Kunsthaus Collection – one of the most important art collections in Switzerland ranging from the 13th century to the present day.

Requests should be submitted at least two weeks before your desired date. We look forward to taking your booking and will be happy to advise you!
